Archaeological Sites and Museums

From the ancient Roman remains of Stabiae to the thermal waters famous since antiquity, the city tells centuries of history. Its seafront, port, and the flavors of local cuisine make it an authentic destination in Campania.
From the ancient city remain several Roman villas and the Grotta di San Biagio, a quarry transformed into a Christian church with frescoes dating back to the 6th century AD.
Another highlight is the medieval castle built around the year 1000 and later rebuilt by the Angevins and the Aragonese.

Reggia Di Quisisana – Stabia Archaeological Museum Libero D’orsi

The historic halls of the Reggia di Quisisana house the Archaeological Museum of Castellammare di Stabia, dedicated to displaying numerous prestigious finds from the Stabian territory.
The museum is named after Libero D’Orsi (1888–1977), a school principal who in the 1950s rediscovered the Stabian villas, previously partially investigated during the Bourbon period.

The museum also exhibits one of the most important and richest collections of Roman-era painting, consisting of frescoes found in the villas of Stabiae.

The Royal Palace was built in the 13th century by the Angevin rulers as a holiday and spa resort, but it was only with the renovations carried out by Charles III of Bourbon between 1765 and 1790 that the palace took on its current appearance. The complex, which reflected the idea of a "hunting and holiday palace," has an L-shaped structure so as to enjoy a splendid view of the gulf on one side and better connections to Castellammare on the other.

After decades of abandonment, the palace underwent a major restoration in the early 2000s, completed in 2009, which restored its former splendor.

Stabiae - Villa San Marco

Villa San Marco, named after a nearby chapel that existed in the 1700s, stretches along the edge of the Varano hill in Castellammare di Stabia in a magnificent panoramic location.

It is one of the otium villas, luxury residences that once dotted the Gulf of Naples. The villa has survived in an extraordinary state of preservation, testifying to a lifestyle that became increasingly widespread among the Roman aristocracy between the 1st century BC and the 1st century AD.

Originally excavated during the Bourbon period between 1749 and 1754, the villa was later reburied and only rediscovered and brought to light again in the 1950s and 1960s by Libero D’Orsi.

Free entrance.

Stabiae - Villa Arianna

Villa Arianna, together with the nearby Villa San Marco, belongs to the category of Roman leisure villas.

It was probably one of the earliest villas built in the area at the beginning of the 1st century BC and takes its name from a fresco depicting the myth of Ariadne located in one of the dining rooms.
The villa extended along the edge of the plateau, adapting to its natural shape and enjoying a magnificent sea view.

Rooms dedicated to social life and relaxation were decorated with refined fresco scenes inspired by mythology and nature, as well as floor mosaics that testify to the high quality of the decorations.

La villa era collegata alla parte bassa della collina attraverso un articolato sistema ancora ben conservato.

Free entrance.
